Under His Wings

Several months ago on a particular day, three different people sent me Psalm 91 via text and email. When you get a message three times, it is wise to pay attention!
Reading this familiar Psalm over and over that day, brought me such comfort, as I was facing a small trial the next day.
1 He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High
Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
2  I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress;
My God, in Him I will trust.”
3  Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler [fn1]
And from the perilous pestilence.
4  He shall cover you with His feathers,
And under His wings you shall take refuge;
His truth shall be your shield and buckler.
5  You shall not be afraid of the terror by night,
Nor of the arrow that flies by day,
6  Nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness,
Nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday.
7  A thousand may fall at your side,
And ten thousand at your right hand;
But it shall not come near you.
8  Only with your eyes shall you look,
And see the reward of the wicked.
9  Because you have made the LORD, who is my refuge,
Even the Most High, your dwelling place,
10  No evil shall befall you,
Nor shall any plague come near your dwelling;
11  For He shall give His angels charge over you,
To keep you in all your ways.
12  In their hands they shall bear you up,
Lest you dash your foot against a stone.
13  You shall tread upon the lion and the cobra,
The young lion and the serpent you shall trample underfoot.
14  “Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him;
I will set him on high, because he has known My name.
15  He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble;
I will deliver him and honor him.
16  With long life I will satisfy him,
And show him My salvation.”
What really stuck out to me that day, was the metaphor of God as a bird in verse 4.
 4  He shall cover you with His feathers,
And under His wings you shall take refuge;
At that time, we had a dove who had made her nest in one of our windowsills, and I used to occasionally watch from inside the house, as she faithfully sat on her eggs through sun and even a night of beating rain, waiting for them to hatch.
Once they did, she became fiercely protective. Any slight noise would cause her eyes to dart about and she would move defensively around the nest, covering her babies with her wings to shield them from any perceived harm.
You see the connection. How passionate is our Father's care for us.
Knowing I can take refuge “under His wings” makes me feel secure, loved, protected and close enough to his chest to feel His heartbeat.
Often I want to run and hide from pain and distress, but the image of the beautiful grand wings of God surrounding me and those I love, cause me to retreat, sure enough.....but into HIm
A friend sent me this picture a couple of days ago....Another holy nudge to remember He is hiding me in His secret place, no matter where I go.
His wings are big enough for all of us. Come! Take shelter.
"How priceless is Your unfailing love! Both high and low among men finding refuge in the shadow of Your wings…" Psalm 36:7

  3. God's word indicates that even during periods of challenges and adversity we are to rejoice during difficulties. Of course, this does not mean that we must be glad about the hardship or trials, but, we can be joyful because we know that God is using the circumstances to prepare and grow us. The Lord teaches us endurance so we can receive full benefit of whatever lessen He has for us, this way our faith is always being strengthened. Lisa your unwavering faith is being blessed by us all.
    Hebrews 4:16 says, “Let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” When we approach the Lord with our burdens, we can be assured that He will meet our innermost needs and show us how to handle every circumstance in life. You and your family are in my prayers.

  4. One of Websters definition of protection is: "supervision or support of one that is smaller and weaker." The Lord is far more able than we can imagine to hold us...carry us...cover us....and love us.
    LOVE LOVE LOVE the blog...and that sweet picture.
    Love you!

  7. Lisa, one of my passions is watching birds in our backyard, providing them a variety of food and a fountain of refreshing water. When I watch the birds, I often meditate on how good God is. He not only loves us with a love I cannot understand but also provides for us, even the birds. I can relate to your picture of the babies under the wings of the Protector. I love hearing stories of God's perfect timing. Yours is beautiful. Praying for God's wisdom to be so perfectly clear to you and your husband. I wait expectantly knowing that He will answer our prayers for you.

  8. Lisa,
    Thank you for this scripture today! Psalms 91 has always been one of my favorite Psalms. I know God is using His Word to encourage you and your family. God has used it so many times to bring me comfort in the midst of the storms that come into my life. Praying for you continually through out each day. Praying God will give you crystal clear direction in every decision you need to make. Love and Blessings to you,
    Barbara

  9. Lisa,
    I had a similar experience about 2 months ago. We have a dove who has been nesting on top of our porch light for the past 2 years. She has hatched about 5 sets of eggs there. This year my brother was working in the yard and he reached up toward the nest and the mother and one baby began frantically flapping and both came out of nest, but it was clear the mother was injured and the baby could not fly. The mother coaxed the baby across the street and under a bush in our neighbors yard. Later that day I went outside and the lone baby was sitting in the nest by himself. I sat down to pray and started to cry. I said, "Lord please bring that mother back, so this baby doesn't die." The Lord said, "Am I not the God who cares for the birds of the air? Do I not feed them and they do not worry?" I prayed for 2 days while that baby sat alone in the nest & kept reminding the Lord of His promise. Then I came out the door on the third day and...the Father bird was in the nest with the baby! (I know him too because he has been present on and off with all the births!) I was so happy all day I couldn't stop singing at God's great faithfulness. Praying for you, weeping with you, rejoicing that God in His faithfulness is covering you! Love Cathy T

  10. Lisa, my husband and i are 2 of the many, many people that are praying for clarity, guidance and peace for you, Robert and your family. Thank you for being willing to share your journey with us. You are a great role model in how to 'share the burden' and showing us how to be a part of the family.

  12. Lisa, thank you so much for sharing your journey and words of His wisdom and peace. I am a three time cancer survivor who was first diagnosed at the age of 38 and was shocked to find out the diagnosis, as I had NO risk factors. Looking back, I can honestly tell you that I was drawn so closely to our Saviour and he sheltered me under the shadow of his wings. In fact, he removed fear and instilled such peace within me to the point I could truly say, I was in a win/win situation...."to live is Christ...to die is gain.". He has walked ever step with me and I praise His wonderful name. He promises us that He will give us the grace to go through all the trials He has either permitted or purposes in our lives. Even though I had always known this through my mind, I know can say I have first hand knowledge of this. He was there for me in the valley of the shadow of death on several occasions and had to face many "hard to hear" diagnosis and alleged outcomes. I leaned on Him and my beautiful family every step of the way.....so much so, that all I had to do was rest, trust in Him, and focus on getting well and accepting whatever God had planned for my future. I am thrilled to let you know that I have been in remission for over six years! Lisa, we love you, but He loves you more than you will ever know. Draw close to Him and your beautiful family....we are here for you. If you ever need to talk, please feel free to contact me at 602-677-6717. In Him, much peace, comfort and love, Paula Bailey
